Protonmail is under DDOS attack

Hi, all,

For anyone not on Protonmail who is attempting to send mail to a Protonmail address, the site is under distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack. This will make it difficult to send or receive mail until the attack is over.

Several of the members here have Protonmail addresses.

Thanks UN, I'm using protonmail and got their alert about it too. So far my account hasn't been affected by these issues to my knowledge. Protonmail assures us that our e-mail contents are safe. I'm not surprised somebody is trying it though, probably government hacker-spies or such like. Good luck with that, protonmail is more secure than they realize.

Your accounts should still be secure. DDOS attacks just overload the server with junk data, to the point where they shut down. It does not affect individual accounts and it cannot reveal anything about individual people.

Its mostly just an inconvenience.

Agreed. DDOS doesn’t penetrate the servers, it just overloads them. That’s the good side.

The bad side is that there’s really no good defense against a DDOS attack. About the best you can do is to efficiently filter out the attack packets and add more perimeter servers.

The above is a large oversimplification.
